Couple’s hard work flowers with top show reward04 Aug
A DISPLAY of alpine plants scooped a Silver Gilt Medal for Slack Top Nursery and Garden, Hebden Bridge, at the Royal Horticultural Society’s Tatton Flower Show.
It was the first time Slack Top had exhibited at Tatton.
“To win a Silver Gilt Medal is a fantastic accolade for our small nursery, as a Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) medal really sets the standard”, said owner Michael Mitchell. “My wife Allison and I work really hard to show people new and exciting ways to use alpines as the vast majority are very easy garden plants. It is really wonderful to have such strong support from all our regular customers across Yorkshire, and we’d like to say a huge thank-you to everyone who has encouraged us in this big step, and came to see us at the show.”
He added: “The show sees around 100,000 visitors over the five days so it has been an enormous challenge just to grow enough plants and keep them in top condition with the varying weather we’ve had over the last month – from 32 degrees to torrential downpours!
“We were very pleased with the number of flowering plants we could display in mid-summer, once again proving that alpines can offer interest for a much longer period than just spring.”
Slack Top Nursery is one of the UK’s top five specialist growers of alpine and woodland plants. The nursery and garden are open to the public on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays (and Bank Holiday Mondays), 10am until 5pm, from March 1 to September 30.
